Bethel Neighborhood Speed Limit Signs Changing from 25 to 20 mph Soon!

I just received an email from Councilor Greg Evans with the following info: “Neighborhood speed limits are changing from 25 mph to 20 mph. The sign changes will begin in Bethel next week. It could be later depending on the weather.”

It would be nice if 20 mph signs included Royal Avenue as well. Except for a one block area at Royal and Danebo it is residential. Crossing the street is often problematic. Too many like to travel 45 mph (or more), and too few will stop for pedestrians. If not 20 mph, then why not speed bumps like those on Elmira Road? Another possibility is a four way stop at Berntzen and Royal. It may be just enough to encourage wannabe race car drivers to use Roosevelt Boulevard instead. Citations issued by traffic cameras would be wonderful.

Good idea Janice. I will forward your idea to the City Transportation Dept.

Still, even if it is mostly residential, Royal is an artery. If you slow it down too much you’re going to make it difficult and crowded during the morning and evening when people are heading to and from work.
